Ok pros and semi pros... time to weigh in with your views on my control room design thoughts!

So, as you might have seen on facebook, I've gutted my studio, and I got all these materials lying around!

A few problems I've encountered are ants coming in TWO spots by doors... sigh, and realizing I need to completely finish my electrical and ventilation design before I erect the walls!!!

I haven't consulted with engineers (god I hope this isn't a sentence that will come back and haunt me... lol) but I'm going for a 11 foot 10 inch span in my jam room (according to all online span calculators, 2x4's will support upto 15 lbs per square foot of weight if built on 12 inch centers) and I want a dropped ceiling as what I lose in room height (it'll be 7 foot 5 inches tall) I'll gain in isolation.

I'm fairly confident 2x6's on 24 inch centers as my studs will support this ceiling, which will consist of rockwool insulation and double layered (with green glue sandwiched) drywalls.

I'm going to have some non-parallel walls in the jam room and some parallel.

First thought for any of you considering pondering it... not all studios have non parallel walls... and some people prefer the comfort of a rectangle room to the off setting shapes non parallel surfaces bring... so I'm not too worried about it in this room (which will be roughly 7.5 H, 11' 10 wide and 21' long).

The control room, I'm thinking about the following (and here's were I am really interested in each of your thoughts...)

1. Rectangle room dimensions are approx. 15 feet by 11 feet.
2. soffitt mounted speakers, positioned at a 60 degree angle to 1.5 feet behind my listening position, which will be 40% of the distance from the same wall as the speakers. This will shorten the room up by 1.5 feet, although the hard surface will be behind the speakers, and the soffits will be mostly cloth, insulation, and some plywood shelving with a bass trap beneath, and a 32-46 inch tv (haven't fully determined the size yet) mounted between (and inside the soffit structure).
DO you guys have any thoughts or experience with soffitt mounted speakers?

3. I am going to put the walls on a 6 degree angle from the back corner of each speaker, and this will extend to about 1.5 feet behind the listening position, at which point it will angle back IN (creating an oxygon like shape) to prevent waves from speakers slapping back, comb filtereing, etc. I will also angle the ceiling at 12 degrees from the speaker wall (so it will effectively be around 6 feet tall) to 1.5 feet behind the listening position.
4. I haven't done much research yet into slot resonators, all the rage at the john sayer's recording studio design forum. any thoughts on slot resonators?

5. so basically I'll have non parallel walls from speaker (60 degrees spread) to behind the listening point at which point they'll curve back in and down towards the couch area...

I've also learned of a product that you can put in your walls that has interchangable ends so you can use one type of wiring for usb, vga, dvi, etc. You can either go with ethernet ports in each room and then get ethernet port adapters:

or that first product I was looking at:

...I'm going to my camp job today... so I hope I can nail down the remaining details this week and get back to building...

that all sounds totally awesome tom! I don't know shit about any of it.. my "studio" consists of a basement and a control room/mixing suite off of it. I put mic's in front of stuff, baffles around it, and try to make it work.

That said, I do pine for an actual purpose-built joint to do my music biz inside of... so go gert 'er done bro, and report back on the results.
